"Melek Ta'us, the Peacock Angel"
©2006

To the Yezidi people of Kurdistan (Northern Iraq), Melek Ta'us, the Peacock Angel, is the God of the world. Related to such figures as Lucifer and Azazel, outsiders have considered this angelic being to be a fallen angel at best and the devil at worst. Those who worship him know that after he fell to earth he repented for his sins, having filled seven jars with his tears to extinguish the fires of Hell. To practitioners of the Feri tradition of Witchcraft he is a manifestation of the Blue God; a central figure who represents our own GodSelf, as well as the GodSelf of the planet.

This piece is inspired by the work of artist Paul Rucker, whose painting of the same name inspired me to begin making art devoted to the Blue God of Feri. Certain traditional elements (peacock wings, flames, the serpent, the rising sun and the morning star) have been recreated here. I have also included earthen jars and shards to represent the seven from the myth, as well as included an original sigil on one of the jars for the invocation of Melek Ta'us.
