The Green Man is an ancient deity of growth and vegetation. Foliate masks have been found in much of ancient Europe representing this personification of the power of the plants, trees, and forests.
My Green Man explores another aspect of this divinity; that of the gifts of psychedelic substances. Ancient shamans used psychotropic plants in order to achieve altered-states of awareness. The sacred mushroom, for example, has been used for centuries, along with cannabis, peyote, and morning glory. Some of these substances found their way into the Witches' flying ointments as described in numerous Witch Trial accounts. These potions would then aid the wearer in astral travel, presumably in their journey to the Witch's Sabbat.
We see that our Green Man is sexually aroused by his trance, a common side-effect of deeply spiritual work. This also is a reminder that even in the world of plants, the foundations of life are sexual.
